Summer Pops Concert – John Philip Sousa!
On Tuesday, July 3rd, the Glens Falls Symphony presents its ever-popular Summer Pops Concert & Independence Day celebration at Crandall Park with fantastic music, fireworks, food vendors, & children’s activities. Each year, this family-friendly event brings thousands of people together to celebrate music, community, history and the simple joys of summer.
This year’s concert is inspired by a musical event of historical significance to Glens Falls – 100 years ago, on June 27, 1918, John Philip Sousa and his 60-piece band performed a concert of patriotic music at the Empire Theatre in downtown Glens Falls! The Summer Pops musical program will feature many of the works played in that concert 100 years ago, in a spirited centennial celebration.
The orchestra will be joined by special guest Mezzo Soprano Erica Washburn, Director of Choral Activities at New England Conservatory, for several pieces. A 1996 graduate of Hudson Falls High School, Ms. Washburn is a highly accomplished and award-winning soloist and choral conductor. The Glens Falls Symphony Children’s Chorus will also make a couple of appearances on stage with the orchestra and guest soloist. The World Awareness Children’s Museum will also be on hand with fun activities for kids, including a table of instruments from all over the world to explore and learn about.
Free to the public, the concert will begin at 7:30pm, concluding with fireworks at dusk. Come early to set up blankets and lawn chairs, bring a picnic, or enjoy great food from a large variety of food vendors.
Crandall Park is located on Upper Glen Street in Glens Falls, NY, next to the YMCA. Parking is available on surrounding streets. Be advised that there is absolutely no parking inside Crandall Park, with the exception of handicapped parking with permits in the access road parking lot from Glen St. near the war memorial.
